Aged PSNU3.6 batteries. Nucleus Classic long term status.

We have retrieved and analyzed two batteries from one of our first Nucleus Classic customer and found positive results.

We have retrieved and analyzed two batteries from on of our first Nucleus Classic customers and found positive results.

Both batteries were 6.25  years old.

  • Battery #1: 1293 cycles and 80% state of health
  • Battery #2: 910 cycles and 72% state of health

State-of-Health is essentially today’s capacity divided by original design capacity.  Today’s capacity is directly related to age, # of cycles, and abuse (e.g. letting sit discharged).  Original design capacity was 36Ah as it was programmed into the BMS.  The general industry standard for battery replacement is when capacity reaches around 75%.

On a related note, early batteries were actually 41Ah (even though they were marketed as 36Ah) so these state-of-health readings are really 10% better than what they should say.  So really, these two batteries have 62% and 70% SoH and probably should have been replaced already.

All of this said, the original estimate that our batteries should be replaced every 5-7 years was accurate, based on just these two batteries.
